1/7/08 THE PINETREE AT THE CAMBRIDGE THIS WEEKEND: We have a message from Dan at The Cambridge... On Saturday afternoon, Colin 'Pinetree' Meads will be at The Cambridge Hotel, before the All Blacks versus Springboks test.
He will be there at 4:30pm until approx 7pm.
Pinetree will be at The Cambridge to hang out and have a few beers with us before the game.
So, after your teams game on Saturday, please urge all players to come down to The Cambridge to have the opportunity to meet our greatest ever All Black!!!!!!

28/06/08 PREMIERS EARN FIRST WIN IN JUBILEE CUP: The OBU Premiers bet Hutt Old Boys Marist 23-22 on Saturday at The Basin Reserve.
The feature of the game was the appearance of All Black Conrad Smith, who was playing since the All Blacks did not have a game on Saturday. In addition to this, many other players returned from injury and unavailability including backs Seminar Manu and Tomasi Palu, while in the forwards Ian Kennedy and James Oliver returned.

Conrad Smith showed his class early on, producing a magical offload in the tackle to set up openside James Oliver for the first try, which was converted by Seminar Manu. HOBM scored two converted tries and kicked a penalty in the first half to have a 17-7 lead at the break.
OBU maintained a lot of pressure on the visitors in the early stages of the second half, and were rewarded with two Seminar Manu penalties. Conrad Smith showed again why he is the best centre in New Zealand, by setting up winger Scott Murray for a good try, which was converted by Manu. HOBM scored a try to take a 22-20 lead with a few minutes remaining. Manu had a penalty chance from 40 meters out but it just fell short. The clearing kick from HOBM missed touch and a few phases later; halfback Tomasi Palu slotted a drop goal to win the game for the home side.

When the backs had the ball, they looked very dangerous. Conrad Smith was all class and reminded everyone just how good he is. The backs were marshalled around the park well by Seminar Manu who continues to impress.
The forwards played well and put a lot of pressure on HOBM, particularly at lineout time. James Oliver had a good game linking well with the backs, while leadership of captain Darryl Gore and Sam Green played a crucial part in a tense game.

25/6/08: BEST OF LUCK JIMMY: OBU's Jimmy Gopperth is being loaned to North Harbour for this years Air NZ Cup. We wish Jimmy the best of luck up there.

22/06/08 The OBU Committee encourage you to get behind the Premiers. They are a talented side and your support will help to give them the edge.
The Senior 1st side came 5th in the first round and are the top qualifier for their second round.
Senior 2 came mid field and has the potential to be very competitive in the second round.
Age Grades: Congratulations to the Under 21 White side (image below vs Norths in May 2008) that went undefeated in the first round, winning the James Gilbert Trophy. This is a talented side and the strength in the age grades is very postive for the future of the club.
Our Under 21 White are mid field.

It is disappointing to have only 6 teams in the Under 19 grade of which OBU has two. Our sides were respectively 3rd & 6th in the first round.

22/06/08 Test tickets for All Blacks Vs South Africa: The club is given a limited number of tickets per test match. If you are a paid up associate member of the club you can make application to Graeme Brooking by email phone Graeme on 021 111 2287.

22/06/08 Social Events: We still have two more social events this year. OBU Idol on June 28 and Cowboys and Indians in July. Come along and enjoy the nights. This year for the first time in front of a capacity crowd Jasmin Stevenson from our women's team took out MR OBU. Congratulations Zasmin. Our club's prize giving is set down for Saturday 6 September at the Dockside. Further details will follow. Watch this space!.

22/06/08 Ex Players Reunite: It was great to see two ex player reunions held this year. Over 40 people from the 1950's University senior sides turned up on old timers day to celebrate 50 years since the 1958 side that won the Jubilee Cup. Ex players from Australia and around the country assembled for the occasions with a function at the CambridgeHotel on Friday and a dinner at the Tug Boat On The Bay on Saturday night. In between time they reminisced at Midland Park, home of the Midland Hotel and the famous room 8A.
A couple of weeks after ithat reunion it was the turn of the 1963 Senior Side from Wellington College Old Boys. Around 30 players from around New Zealand and Australia assembled for a Friday night function and a night at the Rugby on Saturday.
It was great to see the way the sport of rugby builds friendships which last a lifetime.
The Club: Compared to some clubs, OBU is strong. Thanks to over 70 people who volunteer to coach manage and run the club each week and the 500 plus players who turn out each week. We are the biggest Senior club in New Zealand. Your committee is working with the University to up grade our facilities with stage one now completed (The sawdust gym up graded with an artificial surface), stage two and three on the planning boards and hopefully stage two will be undertaken over the summer. The progress we are making is all positive and is starting to reflect in the way our sides are performing on the field.
Many Thanks for Your support and we hope to see you around the grounds or in the Cambridge Hotel after the games.
Your Committee
